Air India CEO Confirms 2026 Will Be the Year of Transformation and Global Lounge Expansion

Air India CEO Campbell Wilson announced 2026 as a transformative year, unveiling new aircraft, upgraded interiors, and a planned Maharaja Lounge in San Francisco.

Key Takeaways

  • Air India CEO Campbell Wilson declared 2026 the year of transformation for international operations under the Vihaan.AI plan.
  • The airline launched its flagship Maharaja Lounge at Delhi (DEL) T3, featuring an Aviator's Bar and First Class sleep suites.
  • The US$400 million widebody retrofit program for 26 Boeing 787-8s is underway, aiming for 20+ upgraded aircraft by year-end despite supply chain delays.
  • New Maharaja Lounges are planned for San Francisco (SFO) and New York (JFK) as part of the global expansion strategy.

Air India CEO Campbell Wilson stated 2026 marks a decisive shift. The airline's multi-year transformation is now becoming visible. This follows four years of intensive work behind the scenes.

Wilson confirmed the goal is a world-class global airline with an Indian heart. The strategy focuses on both air and ground products.

Ground Product: New Maharaja Lounges

The airline recently launched its flagship Maharaja Lounge in New Delhi. This lounge is at Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) Terminal 3. It opens to eligible passengers on February 16, 2026.

The new facility features distinct zones for travelers. These include a tranquil Globetrotter's Study. There is also a nostalgic Aviator's Bar. First Class guests can access private sleep suites. The lounge design incorporates artwork from decommissioned Boeing 747 parts. This is part of a unique Air India heritage theme.

Following the Delhi opening, the carrier plans to expand. Similar Maharaja Lounges are planned for San Francisco (SFO). Another new lounge is also slated for New York (JFK). These lounges aim to elevate the airline's premium positioning.

Fleet and Cabin Modernization

Air India's revival is anchored by fleet renewal. The airline inducted its first new Boeing 787-9 in February 2026. It also operates over 100 narrow-body aircraft with new domestic interiors.

Widebody Retrofit Program

The airline is undertaking a US$400 million retrofit program. This is for its older widebody fleet. The project covers 26 legacy Boeing 787-8 aircraft. These jets will receive all-new seats and entertainment systems. The goal is to match the standards of the newest aircraft.

This extensive upgrade introduces a three-class configuration. This includes Business, Premium Economy, and Economy seats. The retrofit program is part of the broader Vihaan.AI transformation plan.

CEO Wilson acknowledged global supply chain issues. These issues have delayed the full retrofit schedule. The 787-8 program is now expected to finish by mid-2027. Despite setbacks, the airline expects significant progress. More than 20 widebody aircraft with upgraded interiors should be in service by year-end.

Wilson recognized passenger impatience for improvements. He expressed hope that current deliveries will make the wait worthwhile. The transformation focuses on product and services. Safety, however, remains the airline's first priority.
