Nigerian airline Air Peace is facing significant operational disruptions after four of its aircraft were seized by lessor SmartLynx, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. Air Peace claims SmartLynx collected over $5.5 million USD for the lease and is now attempting to leave Nigeria with the funds. The airline had leased the aircraft from SmartLynx to maintain service during peak travel periods while its own fleet of 13 aircraft undergoes repairs and maintenance in the U.S.
The situation has resulted in numerous flight cancellations and stranded passengers at airports across Nigeria, as well as international destinations including England, India, and South Africa. Air Peace has announced plans to resume flights the week of Nov. 17. Passengers are advised to wait for their originally booked flights rather than requesting refunds.
Adding to the airline's challenges, British Channels Islands carrier Blue Islands recently shut down, canceling all flights and stranding passengers. Similarly, Eastern Airways canceled flights to Scotland and Northern England, while Scandinavian airlines Play and Braathens also ceased operations. These closures highlight the increasing challenges faced by smaller airlines due to low traffic and high operational costs.
Air Peace has secured a dry lease agreement with Irish aviation company Aer Cap for its first aircraft. The airline's struggles come as Nigeria's government abandoned plans to revive Nigeria Air after its shutdown in 2023, leaving Air Peace as the country's flag carrier. Multiple airlines in Nigeria have faced leadership and financing difficulties.
