Allegiant Air is expanding its Atlantic City (ACY) base with new nonstop flights to Myrtle Beach (MYR), adding another key leisure destination for travelers.
Key Takeaways
- •Launches new nonstop service between Atlantic City (ACY) and Myrtle Beach (MYR).
- •Begins three-times-weekly flights on May 21, operating on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
- •Marks the fifth destination for Allegiant at ACY, following a recent Florida expansion.
- •Reinforces Atlantic City's growth as a key airport for low-cost leisure carriers.
Continuing its rapid expansion on the East Coast, Allegiant Air (G4) has announced a new nonstop route connecting Atlantic City International Airport (ACY) with Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) in South Carolina. The new service is scheduled to begin on May 21, with flights operating three times weekly on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
This announcement marks another significant step in Allegiant's strategy to build a robust network from the South Jersey travel hub. The Myrtle Beach service will be the airline's fifth destination from ACY, following the recent launch of three new routes to popular Florida destinations: St. Petersburg, Orlando, and Punta Gorda. The airline's initial push into Atlantic City began in December with a route to Fort Lauderdale.
Growing Competition at ACY
The expansion by Allegiant is part of a broader trend of increased low-cost carrier service at Atlantic City International Airport. The airport, operated by the South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA), is also preparing to welcome Breeze Airways (MX) in early May, which will become the fourth commercial airline serving the facility. These new entrants join established carrier Spirit Airlines (NK) and a shuttle bus service to Philadelphia operated by American Airlines (AA).
Stephen Dougherty, the SJTA's executive director, highlighted the benefits of the new route. "For our passengers, this opens the door to a classic getaway with 60 miles of beaches, headline attractions like the SkyWheel and a destination that's known by many as the Golf Capital of the World," he stated.
ULCC Strategy in Focus
Allegiant's growth at ACY perfectly illustrates the ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) business model. This strategy focuses on connecting smaller, often underserved airports with popular leisure destinations through a point-to-point network. By avoiding the complexities of a traditional hub-and-spoke system, ULCCs can offer low base fares that appeal directly to vacationers.
This model relies heavily on ancillary revenue from services like baggage fees and seat selection, as well as vacation packages. The addition of Myrtle Beach, a major tourist destination, aligns perfectly with this leisure-focused approach. The expansion signals confidence in the South Jersey market and provides travelers with more affordable, direct access to popular vacation spots on the East Coast.
