Antigua's Airport Authority launched a new ground transportation hub at Terminal B, centralizing car rentals and tour operators to improve visitor flow.
Key Takeaways
- •Centralizes ground transport with four car rental firms and nine tour operators.
- •Houses a combined rental fleet of 315 vehicles in the renovated Terminal B.
- •Aims to enhance the visitor arrival experience to support Antigua's tourism economy.
- •Features new flight information displays and an extended public address system.
The Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority (ABAA) has officially opened a new, consolidated ground transportation hub at Sir Vere Cornwall Bird International Airport (ANU). The facility is located in the airport's former main terminal, now repurposed and designated as Terminal B. This development centralizes car rental, tour operator, and taxi services to streamline the arrival process for visitors.
The project is a key part of the government's strategy to enhance the nation's tourism infrastructure and improve the overall visitor experience. According to officials, the investment aims to create a more seamless transition from airside to groundside for passengers, which is considered critical for a destination reliant on tourism.
Hub Modernization and Consolidation
The renovated Terminal B now provides a single, organized location for ground transportation services that were previously dispersed throughout the airport grounds, often leading to congestion. According to ABAA Interim CEO Miguel Southwell, the new facility will house four car rental companies: Bigs Car Rental, TG Car Rental, RL Car Rental, and Chase Car Rental. Together, these operators manage a combined fleet of 315 vehicles available to arriving passengers.
In addition to vehicle rentals, the hub accommodates nine tour operators and Destination Management Companies (DMCs). DMCs are professional firms that manage local logistics for events, tours, and activities. Consolidating these services is expected to provide travelers with easier access to transportation options and local excursions upon arrival.
To further improve the passenger experience, the refurbished building has been equipped with modern amenities. A new live flight information display system has been installed, allowing travelers and service operators to monitor flight statuses in real time. The public address system from the main terminal has also been extended into Terminal B, ensuring consistent communication across the airport campus.
A Strategic Investment in Tourism
Government officials have framed the opening as more than just an infrastructure upgrade. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Sean Cenac, emphasized the project's strategic importance. "As tourism continues to be a primary driver of our national economy, supporting employment, entrepreneurship, and foreign exchange earnings, investments such as this are critical," Cenac stated. He added that the new hub will "reinforce our ability to provide seamless service, encourage longer stays, and inspire repeat visits."
Cenac noted that efficient and modern infrastructure is essential for maintaining Antigua and Barbuda’s reputation as a premier travel destination. The sentiment was echoed by the operators themselves. Shakkia Carlos, a representative from TG Car Rental speaking on behalf of the car rental firms, described the launch as a symbol of “continued growth, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence.”
The project was a collaborative effort managed internally by the ABAA. Key figures included Business Development Manager Geneva George, who served as co-project manager, Director of Operations Joseph Samuel, and Maintenance Manager Orlan Hurst, who led the construction team. The airport's IT and Accounts departments also provided crucial support.
Why This Matters
For an island nation like Antigua and Barbuda, where tourism is a cornerstone of the economy, the airport serves as the primary gateway and first point of impression for visitors. This investment in the ground transportation experience at VC Bird International Airport reflects a broader industry trend where airports are focusing on the entire passenger journey, from arrival to departure. By creating a more efficient, organized, and welcoming environment, the ABAA aims to not only improve passenger satisfaction but also strengthen the country's competitive position in the crowded Caribbean tourism market. The move signals a strategic understanding that a positive airport experience can directly influence visitor perceptions and their likelihood to return.
