Aeris, the operator of Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San Jose, Costa Rica, has launched its 2023-2042 Master Plan to significantly expand capacity. This strategic initiative aims to accommodate a projected surge in passenger traffic, from 6.5 million travelers by 2027 to 10.4 million by 2042. The initial phase involves a substantial $390 million investment package, with projects slated for implementation through 2027, commencing in early 2025. Key projects underway include a $62.2 million expansion of the western terminal, adding 16,500 square meters across four levels, featuring new baggage systems, enlarged arrivals, self-service check-ins, and offices. This expansion, 37 percent complete by November 2025, is expected to be fully operational by early 2027. Additionally, Aeris announced two new projects: a 34,500-square-meter remote west platform for seven additional aircraft parking spots, and a service road realignment to enhance emergency response times. Both new projects are scheduled for completion between November 2025 and December 2026. These infrastructure enhancements aim to boost operational efficiency, safety, and passenger flow, adhering to standards set by the US FAA and ICAO, and include environmental controls. While specific details for the post-2027 period remain general, the Master Plan outlines a commitment to sustainable operations and continued infrastructure development. The urgency for these upgrades is highlighted by SJO handling 6.2 million travelers in 2024, a 7.7 percent increase from 2023, reinforcing Costa Rica's air connectivity.
