Mangaluru International Airport (IXE) reports a significant increase in the adoption of DigiYatra, the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation's digital travel initiative. The airport has seen month-on-month growth in DigiYatra usage, climbing from 22% in April to 30% in October, demonstrating a rising preference for digital boarding solutions among domestic travelers. DigiYatra streamlines the passenger experience by enabling passage through airport checkpoints without physical documents, enhancing both convenience and security through facial recognition technology.
In October, 22,779 out of 75,902 domestic passengers departing from Mangaluru International Airport utilized the facial recognition-based boarding process, marking the highest-ever utilization rate at 30%. A peak was reached on October 5, 2025, when 1,118 passengers, representing 39% of domestic travelers, used DigiYatra in a single day. The airport has expanded its DigiYatra infrastructure by adding lanes at departure gates 1A and 1B, complementing the existing lane at gate 1A.
The implementation of DigiYatra has significantly reduced wait times at entry gates and security checkpoints, contributing to a more seamless passenger journey. This initiative aligns with a broader national effort to modernize air travel, emphasizing sustainability, efficiency, and biometric security. Passengers can enroll in DigiYatra through the dedicated app, available on both Android and iOS platforms.
Registration can be completed either online or at airport kiosks, with assistance provided by Digi Buddies. Once verified, passengers can enjoy a digitally enabled journey from check-in to boarding. The increasing adoption of DigiYatra at Mangaluru International Airport reflects a positive trend towards embracing technology to enhance the passenger experience and improve operational efficiency.
