Europe's 'budget-friendly' city to visit at Christmas is 'pure magic' with £35 flights

Vilnius, Lithuania, has been named the cheapest European city to visit at Christmas, with flights available for as low as £35. The city's Christmas tree has been repeatedly voted the most beautiful in Europe, earning Vilnius the title of 'European Christmas Capital' for 2025 by the Christmas Cities Network. Festivities begin on November 29th with the illumination of the Christmas tree in Cathedral Square, which will remain until January 6, 2026. Visitors can enjoy the Christmas Market, ice rink, and a Christmas train that tours the festively decorated streets.

According to the Post Office Christmas Markets Barometer, a two-night weekend escape to Vilnius costs approximately £509, including flights, accommodation, airport transfers, meals, drinks, and market nibbles. This makes Vilnius 8% more affordable than Riga, the second-ranked city. While costs have remained relatively stable compared to the previous year, other European destinations have become more expensive.

Despite a weakening pound against some European currencies, costs have declined in half of the destinations examined. Laura Plunkett, head of travel money at the Post Office, advises budget-conscious travelers to carefully consider currency exchange rates before booking.
