Godrej Secures Cochin Airport Security Modernization Contract

Godrej Enterprises Group has secured a contract to modernize Cochin Airport's security with an automated Under Vehicle Scanning System to meet regulations.

Key Takeaways

  • Deploys an automated Under Vehicle Scanning System (UVSS) at Cochin Airport.
  • Integrates Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) for enhanced vehicle screening.
  • Ensures compliance with Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) regulations.
  • Covers vehicle entry and exit points at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

Godrej Enterprises Group's Security Solutions business has secured a contract from Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) to modernize the airport's perimeter and vehicle access security. Cochin Airport (COK), which handled over 11.1 million passengers in the 2024-2025 fiscal year according to AAI data, will implement a next-generation security system to enhance threat detection.

System Modernization and Regulatory Compliance

The deployment focuses on automating vehicular screening processes to comply with national security mandates and reduce human error. The core of the upgrade is an automated Under Vehicle Scanning System (UVSS), which will inspect every vehicle entering designated airport zones. This move is part of a broader trend across Indian airports to invest in advanced, regulation-ready security infrastructure to protect critical assets and ensure passenger safety.

The new system will be installed at the entry and exit gates of both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. According to a press release, this marks CIAL's first large-scale implementation of a comprehensive vehicular access control system. The UVSS platform captures high-resolution images of a vehicle's undercarriage to identify hidden threats or contraband. It will be integrated with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, which uses optical character recognition to read and log vehicle registration plates. This integration creates a seamless and automated record of every vehicle accessing the airport's secure areas.

Broader Industry Context

The modernization project is designed to ensure strict compliance with guidelines from India's Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). BCAS mandates robust perimeter security and checkpoint screening of all vehicles approaching airport terminals. The automated UVSS and ANPR system directly addresses these regulatory requirements, enhancing the efficiency and reliability of mandated checks.

Pushkar Gokhale, Business Head of Security Solutions at Godrej Enterprises Group, stated that the aviation sector is a strategic growth driver for the company. He noted that airports across India are "investing significantly in regulation-ready security infrastructure," which is increasing demand for smart vehicle screening and automated access management. This project aligns with the industry-wide shift towards integrated security ecosystems where multiple technologies work in concert for comprehensive monitoring.

This contract adds to Godrej Security Solutions' growing portfolio in the aviation sector. The company has secured similar contracts for airports in Mumbai, Kannur, Thiruvananthapuram, and Hyderabad, as stated in the press release. The implementation at Cochin Airport, the fifth-busiest in India for international traffic, represents a significant step in enhancing its landside security protocols.
