A ground handling employee died Sunday evening at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), according to airport officials. The fatality occurred during a solo vehicle incident on the airport's service road. The death is currently being investigated as an accident by authorities.

Incident Details and Identification

The deceased worker was identified as 28-year-old John Lacayanga. The San Mateo County Coroner's Office released his identity on Monday.

Mr. Lacayanga was employed by the Dubai National Air Travel Agency, known globally as dnata. dnata is a major Emirati airport services provider. It offers a range of services, including cargo, ground handling, and flight catering.

The incident took place around 7:00 p.m. Sunday, January 18. Fire Department personnel responded to a vehicle service road near Terminal 3 and International Terminal Boarding Area G.

First responders found Mr. Lacayanga beneath a cargo pallet he was reportedly towing. Officials confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Regulatory and Corporate Response

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) is actively investigating the incident. Cal/OSHA representatives were onsite to conduct interviews with the man’s employer, dnata.

Workplace fatalities in California trigger close scrutiny from Cal/OSHA. The agency examines equipment, employee training, and safety protocols. Investigations may lead to penalties if safety rule violations are found.

dnata released a statement expressing deep sadness over the loss. The company confirmed the team member passed away while on duty. They extended condolences and offered support to the family and colleagues. dnata confirmed it is cooperating fully with all relevant authorities.

Broader Aviation Ground Operations Safety

This tragic event highlights the persistent airport worker safety challenges in ground operations. Ground handling is a critical but high-risk area of commercial aviation.

Industry data shows that ground handling events can lead to injuries, deaths, and significant aircraft damage. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) works to standardize safety.

IATA programs aim to reduce incidents like being "struck against object." Ground support equipment safety is a major focus for global regulators. The annual cost of aircraft ground damage alone could reach nearly $10 billion by 2035. This underscores the financial and human cost of ramp incidents.
