AIRPORTSHow Philippines Airport Upgrades and PAL's New A350-1000 Boost Connectivity
Philippines' President Marcos pledged to accelerate airport modernization via PPPs to boost economic growth, coinciding with Philippine Airlines unveiling its new Airbus A350-1000.

Key Points

  • 1President Marcos committed to accelerating Philippines airport modernization through public-private partnerships (PPPs) to boost economic growth and national connectivity.
  • 2Key projects cited include new terminals at Siargao and Davao International Airports, and expansion works at Laguindingan and Bohol-Panglao Airports.
  • 3Philippine Airlines (PAL) celebrated its 85th anniversary by unveiling its first Airbus A350-1000, making it the first Southeast Asia operator of the long-haul widebody jet.
  • 4The new Airbus A350-1000, which offers up to 25% lower fuel burn, is set to expand PAL's transpacific network, including new routes to North America.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has affirmed the government's commitment to Philippines airport modernization. Speaking at the Philippine Airlines (PAL) 85th-anniversary celebration, he said upgrading aviation infrastructure is central to boosting the economy. The goal is to strengthen regional connectivity and growth and expand opportunities for Filipinos. The event, held at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City on January 17, 2026, also marked the unveiling of PAL’s new Airbus A350-1000.

Infrastructure Investment and Public-Private Partnerships

President Marcos stressed that sustained infrastructure investment is key to building world-class connectivity. He called on private sector partners to continue working closely with the government. This collaboration is vital for advancing aviation-centered initiatives and sharpening the country’s competitiveness. The administration sees these efforts as direct “investments in mobility, in opportunity, and in national progress”.

Key Airport Projects Nationwide

Ongoing airport upgrades across the country are a core focus of the strategy. Many projects are being undertaken through public-private partnerships aviation frameworks.

  • A modular passenger terminal building is under construction at Siargao Airport.
  • A new international passenger terminal is underway at the Davao International Airport.
  • Upgrading and expansion works have begun at Laguindingan Airport in Misamis Oriental.
  • Bohol-Panglao International Airport is also undergoing expansion via a public-private partnership.
  • A new terminal is being built at Caticlan Airport to better serve travelers and tourists.

The modernization of the Manila Airport, also known as Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), continues under a public-private framework. New facilities and immigration eGates are being implemented to make travel “faster, safer, and more efficient”. This is a significant step toward improving the country's main international gateway.

Philippine Airlines Unveils New Flagship Aircraft

The unveiling of PAL’s Airbus A350-1000 coincided with the flag carrier’s 85th anniversary. PAL, founded in 1941, holds the distinction of being Asia’s first commercial airline. The airline was also the first Asian carrier to cross the Pacific in 1946 and fly to Europe in 1947.

The new Airbus A350-1000 is a key part of the airline's fleet modernization and expansion. It is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia and the tenth worldwide to enter service. The aircraft is designed for long-haul routes and opens new possibilities for transpacific travel, including to North America.

Sustainable Aviation and Long-Haul Capacity

The A350-1000 is a modern widebody aircraft that supports more sustainable aviation practices. It features new-generation materials that reduce fuel burn by up to 25 percent compared to older aircraft. This efficiency significantly cuts carbon emissions, aligning with global industry trends.

The aircraft is configured with a premium three-class layout, seating up to 382 passengers. This includes 42 Business Class suites, 24 Premium Economy seats, and 316 Economy seats. The new fleet will strengthen the Philippine Airlines aviation sector, expanding connectivity for trade, tourism, and investment. The President stated that these combined milestones point the country firmly toward the future.
