India's aviation infrastructure grows as Adampur Airport is renamed 'Sri Guru Ravidas Ji Airport'; the new Halwara terminal opens for A320 operations.
The Indian government has announced significant upgrades to Punjab aviation infrastructure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled two major projects on Sunday. This move includes an airport renaming and a key terminal inauguration. The projects aim to boost regional air connectivity in northern India.
Adampur Airport Renaming
Adampur Airport (AIP, VIAX) has been officially renamed. It is now the Sri Guru Ravidas Ji Airport, Adampur. The renaming honors the revered saint and social reformer Guru Ravidas. Adampur Airport is a domestic facility. It serves the cities of Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur. The airport also operates as an Indian Air Force base. This change aligns the airport's identity with the region's cultural heritage.
Halwara Airport Terminal Opens
In a separate move, the Prime Minister inaugurated the new Terminal Building at Halwara Airport in Ludhiana. This facility is a new civil enclave. It is located near a strategically important Indian Air Force station. This new terminal is a crucial development for the state's economic hub.
Enhanced Aircraft Capacity
The Halwara facility dramatically improves operational capacity. The previous Ludhiana airport runway was small. It could only handle small-sized aircraft. The new civil enclave features a longer runway. This runway is now capable of handling larger commercial jets. Specifically, it can accommodate Airbus A320-type aircraft. This expansion opens the door for increased passenger and cargo traffic. Air India is reportedly set to begin operations from this new airport. This will establish a new gateway for the state.
Sustainable Design Features
The new terminal incorporates several modern design elements. It is aligned with sustainable development goals. The structure includes green and energy-efficient features. These features include LED lighting and insulated roofing. It also utilizes rainwater harvesting systems. The architectural design reflects Punjab's rich cultural heritage.
Impact on Regional Air Connectivity
The dual projects mark a significant step forward for regional connectivity. The Halwara Airport terminal inauguration directly benefits Ludhiana. Ludhiana is a major industrial and agricultural center. Improved air access is expected to accelerate business growth. The new capacity for A320 aircraft will allow for more direct routes. This will reduce travel time for passengers and cargo. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) oversees the development. These infrastructure investments are vital for India's growing domestic air travel market. They support the government's regional connectivity scheme (UDAN).
