California-based startup JetZero has successfully raised approximately $175 million in Series B financing to accelerate its development of a revolutionary new aircraft design. The funding round was led by B Capital, a global investment firm.

This capital injection is critical. It will help JetZero advance its full-size Demonstrator prototype.

JetZero is aiming to challenge the long-standing duopoly of Boeing and Airbus in the commercial aviation market.

Strategic Industry Investment

The new funding round includes several key players from the aerospace and defense conglomerate sector. Participants include United Airlines Ventures, Northrop Grumman, 3M Ventures, and RTX Ventures.

This diverse investor base reflects the industry’s growing interest in new airframe designs. JetZero has now secured commitments exceeding $1 billion in total. This total includes government grants and commercial pledges.

United Airlines previously signed a conditional purchase agreement. This order is for up to 200 of the new Z4 aircraft. Delta Air Lines and Alaska Airlines have also partnered with or invested in the Long Beach aircraft startup.

The Blended Wing Body Advantage

JetZero’s flagship aircraft is the Z4. It uses a blended-wing body (BWB) design. This configuration fuses the wings and the fuselage into a single shape.

The company claims this design will deliver up to a 50% fuel efficiency improvement per passenger mile. This is compared to current tube-and-wing aircraft. The Demonstrator prototype itself is designed to achieve at least 30% improved aerodynamics.

This significant reduction in fuel burn directly addresses two major airline concerns. It lowers operating costs and helps meet net-zero emissions goals. The Z4 is also designed to be fully compatible with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
