Lufthansa Group, Europe's leading airline conglomerate, has announced a new multi-market partnership with Klarna, a global digital bank and flexible payments provider. This collaboration, facilitated by financial technology platform Adyen, will enable Lufthansa Group customers to access Klarna's flexible payment solutions when booking travel experiences, starting from November. The initiative aims to provide travelers with enhanced control and convenience by offering options to pay in full, pay later, or spread the cost of their journey over time.
The initial rollout of these payment options will target customers in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. Lufthansa Group plans a phased expansion to include all its network airlines, specifically Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, SWISS, and Brussels Airlines, by the end of Q2 2026. This strategic move addresses the increasing global demand for more adaptable and transparent payment methods in the travel sector.
Both Klarna and Lufthansa Group emphasize the customer-centric nature of this partnership. David Sykes, Chief Commercial Officer at Klarna, highlighted that the collaboration empowers travelers to book trips with greater flexibility, transparency, and choice. Similarly, Oliver Schmitt, Head of Digital Customer Solutions at Lufthansa Group, underscored the commitment to a convenient booking experience, leveraging digital capabilities to offer diverse payment choices.
This partnership further solidifies Klarna's presence within the travel industry, adding Lufthansa Group to a growing portfolio of leading travel brands that include Airbnb, Expedia, Booking.com, and Hotels.com. The integration reflects a broader industry trend towards accommodating consumer preferences for more flexible and manageable payment solutions for significant purchases like air travel, ultimately aiming to drive growth and customer loyalty for the airline group.
