Nepal's Pokhara-Jomsom Flights Halt: Why Airlines Fear the Winter Wind
Tara Air and Summit Air suspended Pokhara-Jomsom flights until March 1 due to low winter demand and high winds, shifting Mustang access to road transport.

Key Points

  • 1Tara Air and Summit Air suspended regular Pokhara–Jomsom flights from December 4 until March 1 due to low demand.
  • 2The suspension is driven by adverse winter weather, including strong winds and the possibility of snowfall, at the high-altitude Jomsom Airport (JMO).
  • 3Improved road conditions on the Beni–Jomsom–Korala route have significantly reduced air passenger traffic, contributing to the economic decision to halt services.
  • 4Chartered flights and emergency helicopter services will continue to operate, maintaining essential access to the Mustang region.

Private carriers have suspended regular flight services along the crucial Pokhara–Jomsom route for the winter season. Tara Air and Summit Air cited multiple factors for the temporary halt. The primary reasons include adverse weather conditions and a sharp decline in passenger demand. Tara Air has paused its regular flights from December 4 until March 1, according to the airline’s station in-charge for Mustang, Suchan Lalchan. Summit Air also confirmed a temporary two-month suspension of its regular service.

Deepak Pokharel, chief of the Jomsom-based Civil Aviation Office, confirmed the suspensions. He noted the possibility of snowfall and low ticket demand during the off-season. While regular commercial flights are halted, essential air connectivity remains. Chartered flights and emergency helicopter services will continue operating.

Operational Challenges at Jomsom Airport

The Pokhara–Jomsom route is known for its challenging operating environment. Jomsom Airport (JMO) sits at a high altitude of 8,976 feet (2,736 m). It is classified as a Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) airport. Flights must operate under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and are typically scheduled for early morning. This avoids the strong, unpredictable winds that develop later in the day. The region's geography makes it susceptible to high winds and low visibility. This frequently disrupts flight operation news even during peak season.

Winter conditions amplify these risks. The combination of potential snowfall and strong winds makes consistent scheduling difficult. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) oversees operations at this critical hub. The airport serves as the main gateway for trekkers and pilgrims visiting Mustang and the Muktinath Temple.

Market Dynamics and Road Competition

Beyond weather, a major shift in passenger behavior impacts the route. Improvements to the Beni–Jomsom–Korala road have made land travel easier. This improved road access offers a cheaper, more reliable alternative to flying. Officials at the Jomsom Civil Aviation Office previously reported a significant drop in air passengers. This decline is a direct result of the better road conditions. Many tourists now opt to travel by road instead of air.

  • Impact on Airlines: Low passenger demand makes maintaining scheduled flights uneconomical.
  • Impact on Passengers: Travelers must now rely on road transport, which takes significantly longer.
  • Historical Context: Airlines often suspend flights on this route for two months during the rainy monsoon season as well.

This winter suspension highlights the dual challenge for Nepal domestic aviation. Carriers must balance high-altitude operational risks with shifting market demand. The temporary halt ensures safety during the harshest weather. It also reflects the economic reality of low tourist traffic to Mustang during this off-season period.
