Philippine Airlines Unveils Longest A350-1000 as Marcos Jr. Vows Major Airport Upgrades
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. recently led the unveiling of Philippine Airlines (PAL)'s new Airbus A350-1000 widebody aircraft. The event was held at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City. It also marked the flag carrier's 85th anniversary celebration. Airbus delivered the first of nine ordered A350-1000s in December 2025.
This delivery makes PAL the first airline in Southeast Asia to operate the largest A350 variant. It is also the tenth airline globally to take delivery of the aircraft. The new jet is a key part of the PAL widebody fleet expansion plan. This plan focuses on growing long-haul capacity.
Marcos Jr. Pledges Aviation Infrastructure Upgrade
President Marcos Jr. used the event to stress the need for a modern aviation sector. He committed to an extensive Marcos Jr. aviation upgrade program. This program aims to boost regional development and economic progress. The President emphasized the role of upgraded transport infrastructure. He stated this is central to strengthening connectivity.
He cited several ongoing Philippines airport modernization projects. These projects are intended to improve air connectivity across the country. Key initiatives include:
- A Modular Passenger Terminal Building at Siargao Airport.
- A new International Passenger Terminal Building at Davao International Airport.
- Upgrading and expansion of Laguindingan Airport and Bohol-Panglao International Airport.
- A new terminal construction underway at Caticlan Airport, the gateway to Boracay.
Marcos Jr. called for greater public-private partnerships aviation support. This collaboration is seen as critical to sustaining these infrastructure initiatives.
PAL's Long-Haul Fleet and Network Strategy
The Philippine Airlines A350-1000 is central to the airline’s long-haul strategy. The aircraft is configured with 382 seats. This includes 42 in business class, 24 in premium economy, and 316 in economy.
The A350-1000 is considered highly efficient for long-haul travel efficiency. The President noted its advanced design and new-generation materials. He highlighted the aircraft's ability to reduce fuel burn by up to 25%. This efficiency supports the carrier's commitment to sustainable aviation practices.
PAL plans to receive five more A350-1000s in 2026. The second delivery is scheduled for May. This prepares the airline for its North America route expansion. PAL Executive Vice President Carlos Luis Fernandez confirmed the delivery schedule. The airline will increase flights to Los Angeles (LAX) starting June 1. Frequency will rise from 14 to 18 times weekly. The full order of nine A350-1000s is expected by 2027.
Industry Impact and Efficiency
- The A350-1000's efficiency lowers operating costs for PAL.
- The aircraft's modern design significantly cuts carbon emissions per seat.
- The government's airport upgrades aim to meet global standards set by bodies like ICAO.
- The Airbus A350-1000 delivery strengthens the Philippines' global air connectivity. This is vital for tourism and trade.
PAL's investment in the A350-1000 fleet positions the carrier for significant growth. It allows for more non-stop transpacific services. This directly supports the national goal of becoming a more competitive global hub. The modernization push covers both the national flag carrier and essential infrastructure. This dual focus is key to future economic growth. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) consistently emphasizes the link between air connectivity and economic prosperity.
