President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. recently led a ceremony in Antique province. He inaugurated the completed Antique Airport Development Project. This major upgrade aims to significantly boost the region's aviation capacity. The project is a key component of the government’s infrastructure modernization program.
Key Infrastructure Upgrades
The project, officially the Evelio B. Javier Antique Airport, cost approximately PHP 1.576 billion. This investment was spearheaded by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).
Airside Enhancements
The runway underwent a critical extension. Its length increased from 1,430 meters to 1,800 meters. This extension now allows the airport to accommodate jet aircraft operations. Previously, the airport could only handle smaller propeller aircraft. A newly developed ramp was also constructed. This ramp is capable of handling up to four jet aircraft simultaneously. This greatly enhances the airport’s operational capacity. The control tower was expanded from three to seven stories. This provides better visibility for safer flight operations.
Terminal and Passenger Experience
The Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) saw a massive expansion. Its floor area grew from 181 square meters to 2,224 square meters. Passenger seating capacity increased dramatically, from 64 to 360. Check-in counters were also increased from two to six. Modern systems for baggage handling were installed. Flight information and passenger convenience systems were also upgraded.
Impact on Western Visayas
President Marcos Jr. emphasized the project’s role in regional economic growth. The improved Philippines aviation capacity is expected to boost tourism. It will also attract more investors to the province of Antique. This development makes Antique a vital gateway for commerce. It offers travelers an alternative to the New Iloilo International Airport. Philippine Airlines currently maintains a three-times-a-week flight schedule. DOTr officials are coordinating with other airlines for new routes. Jet aircraft operations are anticipated to commence by the fourth quarter of 2026. This new infrastructure is set to transform air connectivity in the Western Visayas infrastructure network.
