Key Points
- 1Storm Bram triggered extensive flight and rail cancellations impacting the UK West Midlands and Ireland.
- 2Dublin Airport recorded 73 flight cancellations by 12 PM, including multiple Aer Lingus services from Birmingham.
- 3CrossCountry Trains diverted its Penzance to Birmingham New Street service, skipping stations due to flooding near Totnes.
Storm Bram has brought severe weather, including high winds and heavy flooding, to the UK's West Midlands region, leading to significant travel disruptions across air and rail networks. The Met Office issued yellow and amber weather warnings for heavy rain and wind across Britain's western coastline, encompassing parts of Wales and Scotland. Additionally, the Environment Agency issued flood alerts for specific waterways like Smestow Brook in the Black Country and South Staffordshire, and the River Stour.
Air travel has been particularly impacted, with Dublin Airport (DUB) reporting 73 flight cancellations by 12:00 PM local time, comprising 36 inbound and 37 outbound services. Airlines, including Aer Lingus, cancelled several flights between Birmingham Airport (BHX) and Dublin, specifically the 4:00 PM, 4:55 PM, and 7:55 PM departures. Both Dublin and Birmingham airports advised passengers to contact their respective airlines for updated flight statuses, anticipating further disruptions as wind speeds are expected to increase.
Rail services originating from Birmingham New Street station have also faced substantial delays and cancellations, especially on routes connecting to Penzance. CrossCountry Trains announced diversions for its 6:13 PM service from Penzance to Birmingham New Street, which was rerouted between Bristol Parkway and Cheltenham Spa. This diversion resulted in the service skipping several stations including Penzance, St Erth, and Truro, while making an additional call at Gloucester. The disruption, attributed to flooding near Totnes, caused an estimated eight-minute delay. Passengers were advised that tickets would be honored on Greater Western Railway services between Penzance and Bristol Temple Meads, and on CrossCountry services between Plymouth and Birmingham New Street.
