UK airports are preparing for their busiest Christmas travel period on record, with the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) forecasting December passenger numbers to surpass last year's peak of 22 million. Heathrow Airport alone is projected to handle over seven million passengers through its four terminals this month. This surge follows a historic summer, which saw UK airports manage 90.2 million passengers between July and September 2025, marking a two percent increase from the same period in 2024.
The CAA further anticipates that the total number of passengers for 2025 will exceed 300 million for the first time, up from 295 million in the previous year. Regional airports experienced significant growth during the summer, with Bournemouth reporting a 28 percent year-on-year increase, Liverpool 10 percent, and Edinburgh nine percent. European cities such as Palma de Mallorca, Dublin, Amsterdam, and Alicante emerged as the most popular international destinations for UK travelers.
While punctuality at UK airports is improving, it still lags behind pre-coronavirus levels. In the third quarter of 2025, 64 percent of flights departed or arrived within 15 minutes of schedule, an improvement from 57 percent a year prior but still below the 69 percent recorded in the same period of 2019. Selina Chadha, group director for consumers and markets at the UK CAA, advised passengers to check for potential disruption, especially due to winter weather, and to plan packing to avoid security delays. UK Aviation Minister Keir Mather affirmed the government's commitment to the sector's future, citing expansion plans for Luton, Gatwick, and Heathrow airports, alongside efforts to redesign airways to support connectivity and economic growth.
