A United Airlines maintenance technician was killed overnight following a collision between two aerial lift machines on the property of Denver International Airport (DIA). The deceased was an employee of United Airlines. A company spokesman confirmed the death and stated that United is cooperating with authorities while providing support to the employee’s family and coworkers. Preliminary findings from the Denver Police Department indicate that two employees were operating separate cherry-picker type lifts when one machine stopped for reasons currently unknown. The second lift then crashed into the first, trapping the operator of the stopped machine. The operator was subsequently freed and transported to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
The US Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) has initiated a formal investigation into the workplace fatality, according to an agency spokeswoman. OSHA officials are required to complete their inspection within six months. Denver Police are also continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the vehicle crash that occurred on the airport’s property.
