When Will Udhampur Airport Start Civilian Flights? Minister Sets 7-Month Target

Union Minister Jitendra Singh confirmed that Udhampur airport civilian flights are set to begin within the next six to seven months. The announcement followed a high-level civil aviation review meeting in Udhampur.

Initial flight operations will utilize an interim terminal building located within the Air Force Station Udhampur. This temporary arrangement aims to expedite the commencement of Jammu and Kashmir air services. The Minister praised the close coordination between the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to fast-track the project.

Phased Development Plan

This initiative is structured as a two-phase regional air connectivity project. Phase 1 focuses on using existing facilities and interim arrangements. The interim terminal is planned to cover about 2,200 square meters. It will be capable of handling up to 150 passengers.

• Initial Aircraft: Operations are expected to use regional aircraft like the ATR-72 or Q400 models.
• Scheme Inclusion: The new air services are planned under the government’s UDAN scheme, which focuses on regional connectivity.

Phase 2 involves developing a full-fledged airport and a dedicated Civil Enclave. This long-term plan requires acquiring nearly 28 acres of adjacent land. Development of the permanent airport is targeted for completion within about three years.

Regional and Economic Impact

Union Minister Jitendra Singh emphasized the project's importance for Chenab region development. The new air link will significantly ease travel for residents. It is also expected to boost socio-economic activities and tourism in the region.

Udhampur is being established as a major connectivity hub. It will offer multimodal options, including air, rail, and express road corridor links. The Minister noted the government's sustained focus on uplifting remote regions since 2014.

Senior officials attended the review, including Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Sameer Kumar Sinha, and AAI Chairman Vipin Kumar. Their presence signals strong governmental and regulatory support for the project's timely execution.
