Wizz Air Boosts Alicante-Elche Network with Eastern Europe Flight Surge
Key Points
- 1Wizz Air is significantly increasing frequencies to Bucharest, Katowice, and Belgrade.
- 2The airline introduced new winter routes from Alicante to Milan-Malpensa and Bratislava.
- 3Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC) recorded 18.38 million passengers in 2024, a 16.8% increase, according to Aena.
The Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air has announced a significant expansion. This growth focuses on its flight programme from Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC). The plan includes increased flight frequencies to several key Eastern European destinations. This expansion is set for the upcoming summer season.
Network Boost Details
Wizz Air is one of the fastest-growing carriers at ALC. The airline reportedly carried over 600,000 passengers between January and October. This puts its passenger growth behind only Ryanair and easyJet.
Several routes will see a substantial boost in service. Flights to Bucharest will increase from five to seven per week next summer. This change reflects strong passenger demand. The Katowice (Poland) route also gains additional services. It will rise to seven weekly flights in spring and autumn. The service will maintain four flights per week during the summer season.
New and Expanded Routes
The recently launched Belgrade–Alicante route has exceeded expectations. It is the only direct connection between Alicante and Serbia. Its strong performance has prompted Wizz Air to add a fourth weekly flight on Sundays. Beyond Eastern Europe, the airline is also adding services. It will increase flights to Budapest this winter. Furthermore, Wizz Air will expand services to Rome-Fiumicino. This is due to the airline strengthening its base fleet there. Alicante will gain an additional weekly flight to Rome. This increases the service from four to five flights per week next summer.
New winter routes Milan Bratislava are also part of the expansion. The airline introduced Milan-Malpensa with four weekly flights. It also started three weekly services to Bratislava. This move restores a link that was absent for more than a decade. The Bratislava route aligns with Wizz Air's new base there. This strategic move enhances connectivity across Central and Eastern Europe.
Strategic Growth and Airport Performance
This continued expansion highlights ALC's growing importance. It is now a critical gateway to Central and Eastern Europe. The airport itself is experiencing record passenger growth. According to Aena data, Alicante-Elche Airport welcomed 18.38 million passengers in 2024. This marks a 16.8% increase compared to 2023.
- Opportunity: The expansion provides more affordable travel options. It directly connects Spain’s Costa Blanca with key Eastern European cities.
- Market Impact: It solidifies Wizz Air’s position in the Spanish market. This increases competition for other low-cost carriers.
- Regulatory Oversight: All new routes and increased frequencies operate under EASA safety regulations. This ensures continued high operational standards.
For more commercial aviation news and analysis, industry stakeholders are monitoring this trend. The focus on secondary cities and increased frequencies shows confidence. It suggests sustained demand in the post-pandemic travel market.
