Air India Pilot Removed from Vancouver Flight Over Alcohol Allegations, Canada Demands Action
Transport Canada has requested a safety probe from Air India after a captain was removed from Flight AI186 at Vancouver International Airport on December 23, 2025, for allegedly being

Key Points

  • 1Transport Canada initiated a safety probe after an Air India captain was found under the influence of alcohol at Vancouver Airport on December 23, 2025.
  • 2The incident violates Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) 602.02 (Fitness for Duty) and 602.03 (Alcohol or Drugs — Crew Members).
  • 3Air India must submit a detailed response and corrective action plan to Transport Canada by January 26, 2026.
  • 4The event follows a separate DGCA show-cause notice to an Air India pilot for alleged safety violations related to aircraft dispatch and system snags on flights AI-358/AI-357.

Transport Canada has flagged a serious airline safety concern involving Air India. The issue follows a complaint from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). An Air India pilot alcohol incident occurred at Vancouver International Airport incident (CYVR). The captain was allegedly unfit for duty before Flight AI186. This flight was scheduled for Vienna (LOWW) on December 23, 2025.

Regulatory Breach Details

The RCMP informed authorities of the incident. Captain Saurabh Kumar reported for duty while under the influence. He was deemed unfit for duty. Two breathalyzer tests confirmed this at the airport. The captain was then advised to leave the aircraft.

Transport Canada stated this violates Canadian Aviation Regulations violation (CARs). Specifically, the breach involves CARs 602.02 and CARs 602.03. Transport Canada also cited conditions in Air India’s Foreign Air Operator Certificate (FAOC). CAR 602.02 covers the pilot fitness for duty requirement. CAR 602.03 prohibits a crew member from working while under alcohol influence. It also prohibits work within 12 hours of drinking.

Transport Canada indicated enforcement action is likely. This will be pursued by the RCMP and Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA). The Canadian authority has asked Air India for corrective steps. Air India must submit a response by January 26, 2026. This response must detail findings and measures taken.

Broader Safety Context and Compliance

This Vancouver International Airport incident is not isolated. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued a notice one day earlier. This DGCA show-cause notice went to an Air India pilot. It cited serious safety concerns on flights AI-358 and AI-357. Issues included aircraft dispatch and Minimum Equipment List (MEL) compliance. The pilot reportedly accepted the aircraft despite repeated snags. System degradation was also noted. A smell of smoke was reported near a door on flight AI-358.

These combined events highlight significant airline safety concerns. They raise questions about Air India’s operational oversight. Adherence to international standards is paramount. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) sets global safety rules. Breaches of a Foreign Air Operator Certificate carry serious consequences. They can impact an airline's global operating authority. The industry watches for Air India's response. For more information on this and other commercial aviation news, visit flying.flights.
