Air Transat has inaugurated a groundbreaking direct air service connecting Toronto, Canada, with Accra, Ghana, establishing the first non-stop link between the two nations. This new seasonal route, operating twice weekly on Wednesdays and Sundays from June 17 to October 22, 2026, is set to significantly enhance travel, trade, and investment opportunities, thereby fostering stronger bilateral relations. The service offers a more efficient and convenient travel option for passengers by eliminating the necessity for lengthy European layovers.
The introduction of this direct flight is a direct outcome of the Canada-Ghana Air Transport Agreement (ATA), which was signed in March 2025. This pivotal agreement established the regulatory framework for expanded aviation cooperation, permitting up to 14 weekly passenger flights and 10 weekly cargo flights by multiple carriers. The ATA's provisions are specifically designed to stimulate growth in trade, tourism, and people-to-people connections, aligning with broader strategic objectives between Canada and Ghana.
This initiative holds particular significance for the Ghanaian diaspora residing in Ontario and caters to the increasing interest in travel to Ghana. It also arrives opportunely as communities and fans in both countries look ahead to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Canada will co-host with the United States and Mexico. Myriam Montrat, High Commissioner of Canada in Ghana, emphasized that the route opens a new chapter in partnership, deepening cooperation and expanding opportunities for business and cultural exchanges. Sebastian Ponce, Chief Revenue Officer at Transat, highlighted the service's alignment with the airline's African growth strategy and its direct response to market demand.
The new Air Transat service is expected to facilitate substantial economic and cultural exchanges. By streamlining travel, it actively promotes tourism, business ventures, and educational programs, further solidifying Canada's strategic relationship with Ghana, a key partner in West Africa. This direct link represents a tangible outcome of diplomatic efforts to enhance connectivity and mutual prosperity.
