Asia's SAF Supply Gets Boost: EcoCeres Opens Malaysia's First Commercial Plant.

EcoCeres opened Malaysia's first commercial-scale Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) plant in Johor, adding 420,000 tonnes of capacity to Asia's decarbonization efforts.

Key Takeaways

  • EcoCeres opened Malaysia's first commercial-scale SAF plant in Johor on January 26, 2026.
  • The facility has a combined annual capacity of 420,000 tonnes, boosting EcoCeres' global capacity to 770,000 tonnes.
  • The plant utilizes waste-to-fuel technology, converting agricultural residues like palm oil mill wastewater into SAF.
  • The development supports Malaysia's proposed 1% SAF blending mandate for international flights from KLIA by January 2027.

EcoCeres Inc. has officially opened its first Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) plant in Malaysia. The new facility is located in Pasir Gudang, Johor. This marks a major step for the company's regional platform. It also significantly boosts Malaysia's renewable fuel industry. The opening ceremony took place on Monday, January 26.

New Commercial-Scale SAF Facility

The Pasir Gudang facility is Malaysia's first commercial-scale SAF production site. It has an annual licensed capacity of 350,000 tonnes. The plant produces SAF, renewable diesel (HVO), and other bio-based products. Commercial operations for the facility began in October, according to EcoCeres.

The new site uses waste-to-fuel technology. Feedstocks include used cooking oil and palm oil mill wastewater. This process converts agricultural waste into high-value, low-carbon renewable fuels. The facility's total combined capacity is 420,000 tonnes per year. This addition lifts the company's global capacity to approximately 770,000 tonnes annually. EcoCeres aims to supply growing demand across the Asia-Pacific region.

Aligning with Aviation Decarbonization Goals

The aviation sector faces immense pressure to decarbonize. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is the most viable path forward. IATA expects global SAF production to reach 1.9 million tonnes (Mt) in 2025. This volume represents only about 0.6% of total jet fuel consumption. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has set a net-zero CO2 goal by 2050. ICAO also targets a 5% carbon intensity reduction by 2030.

The new Malaysia SAF production capacity helps close this supply gap. EcoCeres CEO Matti Lievonen noted the plant's strategic importance. It demonstrates a commitment to reliable supply capability. The facility supports the accelerating demand for renewable fuel solutions.

Policy and Market Impact

The EcoCeres Johor plant aligns with national policy. Malaysia’s Minister of Plantation and Commodities highlighted this alignment. It supports the National Energy Transition Roadmap. The country aims for net-zero emissions 2050.

The Malaysian government is also developing demand-side policies. A proposed 1% SAF blending mandate is under consideration. This mandate would cover international flights departing from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The potential implementation date is January 2027. Such a mandate would create a policy-backed market. This provides confidence for producers like EcoCeres.

Challenges and Opportunities in Asia

Scaling up commercial-scale SAF facility output remains challenging. SAF is currently two to five times more expensive than fossil jet fuel. Policy support is critical to making SAF cost-competitive. Malaysia's abundant agricultural waste feedstock offers a key advantage. The country is the world's second-largest palm oil producer. Utilizing waste streams from this industry is vital.

This new facility strengthens Asia-Pacific renewable fuels efforts. It positions Malaysia as a regional leader in green fuel. This development is crucial for airlines seeking long-term SAF supply. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) stresses the need for more production. This new capacity is a welcome step for aviation decarbonization.
