Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the new integrated terminal at Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI) on December 20, marking a significant upgrade to aviation infrastructure in Northeast India. The facility, which represents a total investment of approximately ₹4,000 crore, will dramatically increase the airport’s annual throughput capacity to 13.1 million passengers. This expansion is crucial for positioning Guwahati as a primary aviation hub connecting the region’s eight states with domestic and international destinations, particularly strengthening ties with Southeast Asia.
Known as the “Bamboo Orchids Terminal,” the structure draws inspiration from Assam’s rich natural and cultural heritage, featuring designs based on strong bamboo, foxtail orchids (kopou phool), and traditional gamosa patterns. This nature-themed approach emphasizes sustainability and recently earned the terminal the International Architectural Award 2025 in the Transport category. Operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited, the modern facility is equipped with 10 aerobridges, 16 self-baggage drop counters, and advanced security systems to streamline passenger flow. During the dedication ceremony, PM Modi is also expected to unveil an 80-foot statue of the airport’s namesake, Bharat Ratna Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi.
