Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the new terminal building at Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Guwahati, Assam. The facility, developed at a cost of Rs 4,000 crore (approximately $480 million USD), is being touted as the country's first "nature-themed" airport, designed to reflect Assam's rich natural heritage and cultural ethos. The total project cost, including Rs 1,000 crore earmarked specifically for Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities, stands at Rs 5,000 crore.
The expansive new terminal, covering 1,40,000 square meters, significantly enhances the airport's throughput capacity. Officials confirm that the upgraded infrastructure is capable of handling 13.1 million passengers per annum. PM Modi emphasized the strategic importance of the facility, stating that the airport is positioned to become a vital aviation hub for Northeast India and a crucial gateway connecting the region to Southeast Asia. The design, which draws inspiration from the state's biodiversity, is also intended to attract tourists and facilitate visits to religious sites like the Kamakhya Temple.
