Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport is set for a €1.1 billion expansion and modernization project to better accommodate British travelers following the implementation of the EU's Entry-Exit System (EES). The airport's upgrades include a dedicated area equipped with advanced technology like EES machines for fingerprinting and facial image capture, streamlining the entry process for non-EU passengers. This initiative addresses the increased scrutiny and data collection required by the EES, which mandates the electronic storage of facial images and fingerprints for each entry and exit within the Schengen area.
The airport anticipates significant usage of the new EES machines, given that 6.12 million British passengers traveled through Alicante airport the previous year. Beyond passenger processing, the renovation encompasses advanced baggage inspection equipment, enabling the screening of liquids and electronics without removal from hand luggage. This technology enhances security measures while improving passenger convenience and reducing processing times.
The comprehensive revamp extends to the entire terminal area, including parking facilities and road infrastructure, increasing the airport's overall size by nearly 30%. The existing terminal building will be demolished and replaced with a modern facility designed to handle up to 26 million passengers annually. Passengers can expect enhanced amenities such as automated conveyor belts, expanded shopping areas, and an exclusive VIP lounge.
The project is being rolled out in phases, with the initial phase slated for completion by Summer 2027. Further enhancements to the remaining airport infrastructure are scheduled to continue until 2031. The upgrades aim to position Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport as a leading European gateway, capable of efficiently managing increasing passenger volumes while providing a seamless travel experience.
