Key Points

  • 1Indian DGCA suspended four Flight Operations Inspectors (FOIs) due to IndiGo's widespread flight cancellations and passenger disruptions.
  • 2IndiGo cancelled over 200 flights on Thursday and 54 on Friday from major Indian airports, stranding thousands of passengers.
  • 3A four-member DGCA inquiry panel is investigating IndiGo's manpower planning, rostering, and compliance with new pilot duty norms.

The Indian aviation safety regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has suspended four Flight Operations Inspectors (FOIs) following massive disruptions in IndiGo's operations. These disruptions led to the cancellation of thousands of flights and left a significant number of passengers stranded across various airports, prompting intensified scrutiny from the regulatory body.

The airline's operational failures included over 200 flight cancellations from Delhi and Bengaluru on Thursday, followed by an additional 54 cancellations (31 arrivals and 23 departures) from Bengaluru Airport alone on Friday. FOIs play a critical role in aviation safety by inspecting, auditing, and certifying airlines and their personnel, ensuring adherence to strict regulatory standards, and overseeing training and accident prevention measures.

In response to the crisis, the DGCA has established a four-member inquiry panel, which includes senior officials such as Joint Director General Sanjay Brahamane. This panel is tasked with identifying the root causes of IndiGo's widespread operational disruptions, assessing manpower planning, fluctuating rostering systems, and the airline's preparedness to implement new pilot duty period and rest norms that became effective on November 1. IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers and COO Isidre Porqueras have been summoned multiple times to appear before this investigation panel.
