Indian DGCA Terminates Four Inspectors, Probes IndiGo Amid Flight Cancellations
The Indian DGCA terminated four flight operations inspectors and is probing IndiGo following widespread flight cancellations.

Key Points

  • 1Indian DGCA terminated four Flight Operations Inspectors on December 12, directly responsible for supervising IndiGo, amid widespread cancellations.
  • 2An eight-member oversight team from the Indian Civil Aviation Ministry was established to monitor nationwide airport and airline operations.
  • 3IndiGo CEO received a show-cause notice and requested more time for a root cause analysis, citing operational complexity.
  • 4IndiGo offered Rs 10,000 travel vouchers to severely impacted passengers for future travel within 12 months.

The Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken decisive action against IndiGo following extensive flight disruptions, terminating the employment of four Flight Operations Inspectors. These inspectors were directly responsible for overseeing IndiGo's operational compliance. This significant regulatory move, announced on Friday, December 12, comes as thousands of passengers continue to face the impact of widespread flight cancellations across the airline's network.

In a broader response to the ongoing operational challenges, the Indian Civil Aviation Ministry has also established an eight-member oversight team. Composed entirely of personnel from the DGCA's administrative division, this team is tasked with closely monitoring the daily operational performance and ensuring passenger welfare across all airports and airlines nationwide, signaling a heightened level of regulatory scrutiny.

Earlier, the Indian DGCA had issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers regarding the widespread cancellations. IndiGo has since requested additional time to provide a comprehensive response, citing the "complexity and vast scale of operations" that make it "realistically not possible to pinpoint the exact cause(s)" immediately. The airline indicated that preliminary contributing factors include the Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) order and stated a full Root Cause Analysis (RCA) would be shared upon completion, aligning with the DGCA's manual allowing a fifteen-day response timeline for such notices.

To mitigate the impact on affected travelers, IndiGo has offered travel vouchers valued at Rs 10,000 to severely impacted customers. These vouchers can be utilized for any future IndiGo journey within the next 12 months, providing a measure of compensation for the inconvenience caused by the operational disruptions.
