Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Terminal 2 of the Lokpriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati, Assam, marking a significant infrastructure milestone for Northeast India. The new facility, covering 1.4 lakh square meters, is designed to manage up to 13 million passengers annually. Critically, the terminal dramatically increases peak hour capacity, capable of handling approximately 4,300 domestic and over 200 international passengers simultaneously, addressing previous congestion issues.
Terminal 2 is distinguished as India’s first nature-themed airport, drawing architectural inspiration from Assam’s unique culture and environment, including the Kaziranga National Park and the traditional 'japi' patterns. The design heavily incorporates local elements such as bamboo, orchid-shaped pillars, and features like the 'Sky Forest' to provide a natural, green experience for travelers. This focus on design excellence earned the terminal the International Architectural Award 2025 in the Transport category prior to its official opening.
Beyond aesthetics, the facility emphasizes sustainability, operating on solar energy and incorporating advanced water saving and reuse systems, alongside maximizing daylight usage. Operationally, the terminal utilizes modern aviation technology, including automated baggage handling systems, quicker immigration counters, and full-body scanners for streamlined security checks, enhancing overall passenger experience and supporting regional tourism and commerce as noted by PM Modi.
