IndiGo Faces Widespread Flight Delays and Chaos After A320 Software Upgrades
IndiGo passengers faced significant flight delays and airport chaos across India following mandatory A320 family aircraft software upgrades.

Key Points

  • 1IndiGo passengers experienced widespread flight delays of 30 to 90 minutes across India on Tuesday, leading to significant airport chaos and frustration.
  • 2Travelers reported poor communication, lack of airline assistance, and issues with customer service following the disruptions.
  • 3The delays stemmed from mandatory software upgrades on A320 family aircraft, advised by Airbus and EASA due to a potential flight-control issue.
  • 4IndiGo completed upgrades on all 200 of its A320 aircraft, acknowledging "minimal delays" during the process affecting its 2,300+ daily flights.

IndiGo passengers faced widespread flight delays and significant airport disruption across India on Tuesday, with live tracker Flightradar24 reporting numerous flights running 30 to 90 minutes behind schedule. Travelers voiced strong complaints on social media regarding poor communication, insufficient assistance, and inconsistent updates from the airline. Incidents included "complete chaos" at Delhi airport, where an 11 pm flight to Bengaluru was delayed for hours, leading to passenger frustration and ground staff distress.

Many passengers also reported issues with customer service accessibility and alleged that IndiGo refused assistance for delays under two hours, citing its "Plan B" obligations. In response to complaints, IndiGo issued apologies, attributing delays to "operational reasons," and directed passengers to airport teams for real-time assistance. These disruptions occurred in the wake of mandatory software upgrades on A320 family aircraft, following an advisory from Airbus and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) concerning a potential flight-control issue linked to intense solar radiation.

By Sunday, IndiGo, Air India, and Air India Express had completed upgrades on over 90% of the 338 affected aircraft. While IndiGo, which operates more than 2,300 daily flights, confirmed all 200 of its A320 aircraft were fully updated and compliant, the necessary maintenance led to extended turnaround times and some cancellations across the Indian aviation sector. The airline acknowledged experiencing "minimal delays" during the upgrade process.
