Nigeria's Federal Government has officially designated Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, as an international airport, capable of processing international passengers. This significant announcement was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during a meeting with Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno in Abuja. The decision paves the way for Uyo to become a key gateway for international air travel, enhancing regional connectivity and economic activity.
The minister highlighted that Victor Attah International Airport possesses all the necessary modern facilities to compete with other international airports across Nigeria. These include a standard Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility and a runway exceeding three kilometers, which can accommodate larger aircraft. A joint team comprising representatives from relevant Nigerian government agencies, including Customs, NiMet, FAAN, and NCAA, will be established to oversee the transition process from local to international operations, ensuring all regulatory requirements are met.
Governor Umo Eno expressed appreciation for the federal government's approval, affirming that the airport is well-equipped for its new international role. He outlined the Akwa Ibom State government's plans to further develop an airport ecosystem, which includes the construction of a dedicated cargo terminal, already factored into the 2026 budget. Additionally, 100 units of residential buildings are under construction to accommodate airport staff, supporting the expanded operations. The governor's ambitious target is to see the first international flight depart from Uyo by the end of the first quarter of 2026.
Victor Attah International Airport, originally opened in 2009 as Akwa Ibom International Airport and renamed in 2018, is strategically located near Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State. It has undergone expansions to handle large aircraft and currently serves as a vital regional hub, showcasing the area's infrastructure and cultural significance. The upgrade to international status is expected to significantly boost tourism, trade, and investment in the region.
