Key Points

  • 1Qantas is targeting a commercial launch in the first half of 2027 for Project Sunrise, following a slight delay from original plans.
  • 2The initial routes will be non-stop from Sydney to London (LHR) and Sydney to New York (JFK).
  • 3The flights will use 12 specially modified Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft, configured with a low-density 238-seat cabin.
  • 4A key feature is the unique 'Wellbeing Zone' for all passengers to stretch and refresh during the up to 22-hour journeys.

Qantas is moving closer to launching its ambitious Project Sunrise flights. The airline is targeting a launch in the first half of 2027. This project will introduce the first regular non-stop Sydney to London and Sydney to New York non-stop services. These routes will become the world's longest commercial flights.

The Aircraft: Airbus A350-1000ULR

Qantas has ordered 12 specially modified Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. These jets are designated as Airbus A350-1000ULR (Ultra Long Range). The first aircraft is expected to be delivered to Qantas in late 2026. The non-stop journeys are expected to take up to 22 hours. This capability will finally overcome the "tyranny of distance" for Australian travelers.

Cabin Design for Ultra-Long-Haul Flights

The A350-1000ULR features a premium, low-density cabin layout. It will have only 238 seats in total. This is significantly fewer seats than a standard A350-1000. The design prioritizes long-haul travel comfort for all passengers.

Key features of the Qantas A350 cabin configuration include:

  • Six fully enclosed First Class suites.
  • Fifty-two Business Class suites with sliding doors.
  • Forty Premium Economy seats and 140 Economy seats.
  • A dedicated A350 Wellbeing Zone for all passengers.

This unique Wellbeing Zone is positioned between the Premium Economy and Economy cabins. It offers a space for light movement and stretching. The zone also includes a self-service hydration station. Cabin lighting and meal service timing will be calibrated. This is based on scientific research to help reduce jet lag. Qantas worked with the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre on this design.

Industry Impact and Operational Challenges

The launch of these ultra-long-haul flights marks a major milestone for commercial aviation news. The direct routes are estimated to save passengers up to four hours of travel time. This is compared to current one-stop services. Current Qantas flights from Sydney to London stop in Singapore. Sydney to New York flights currently stop in Auckland.

Operational challenges remain a key focus for the airline. Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson noted the need for three aircraft to support a daily service on one route. The airline is awaiting necessary regulatory approvals and certifications. The flights will require special operational planning. This includes managing crew duty times and payload restrictions. The long duration also requires a premium price point. Qantas expects passengers will pay a premium for the convenience of non-stop travel. The success of the existing Perth to London route gives Qantas confidence. This route uses a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Project Sunrise will push the boundaries of ultra long range aircraft capabilities even further.
