AIRLINESSpirit Airlines Adds Five Seasonal Nonstop Routes from DTW; When Do They Start?
Spirit Airlines announced the return of seasonal nonstop service from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) to five US cities starting in April 2026.

Key Points

  • 1Spirit Airlines is resuming five seasonal nonstop routes from DTW: Boston, Charlotte, Dallas-Fort Worth, Philadelphia, and Raleigh.
  • 2The service begins April 15 and 16, 2026, boosting Spirit’s total DTW nonstop destinations to 17.
  • 3The expansion occurs as Spirit manages fleet issues and broader network cuts, focusing on high-value markets like Detroit.
  • 4Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport recorded over 12.5 million enplaned passengers through September 2025, underscoring the market's size.

Spirit Airlines is significantly boosting its Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) presence. The carrier is resuming seasonal nonstop service to five popular U.S. destinations. This announcement was made on Thursday, January 15, 2026.

Flights will serve Boston, Charlotte, Dallas-Fort Worth, Philadelphia, and Raleigh. The new routes expand the airline’s list of DTW nonstop destinations to 17 total.

Key Route Details

Service to Boston (BOS) and Philadelphia (PHL) begins first. These Spirit seasonal flights will start on April 15, 2026. Flights to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Charlotte (CLT), and Raleigh (RDU) follow. Service for these three routes begins on April 16, 2026.

Frequencies vary by destination. The Boston and Philadelphia routes will operate once daily. The Spirit Airlines Detroit service to Dallas will fly five times per week. Charlotte and Raleigh routes will run four times per week.

Andrea Lusso, Spirit’s Vice President of Spirit Airlines network planning, commented on the move. “We’re bringing back five popular destinations for Motor City travelers,” Lusso stated. The goal is to help guests plan a spring getaway. The airline has offered affordable convenient travel from Detroit for decades.

Flights are available now for booking on the Spirit Airlines website.

Network Strategy and Market Context

This expansion at DTW comes during a period of network adjustment. Spirit Airlines is currently trimming its network elsewhere. The ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) recently ended service at several U.S. airports. These cuts align with a strategy to manage a smaller operating fleet. Spirit is dealing with the Pratt & Whitney GTF engine crisis. This has grounded a significant portion of its Airbus A320neo fleet.

Despite these challenges, Spirit is increasing frequencies on profitable routes. The DTW market remains a key focus. The airport is a major hub for the region. DTW saw significant passenger volume in 2025. Through September 2025, the airport recorded over 12.5 million enplaned passengers. This highlights the importance of Michigan airport passenger enplanements to the carrier.

Operational Notes

The airline’s local operation has faced recent changes. Spirit Airlines notified the state of Michigan last year. The notice concerned the layoff of 103 flight attendants. These layoffs at DTW began on December 1. This shows the complex operational environment. The airline must balance route expansion with cost management.
