United Premium Plus Upgrade Enhanced Long-Haul Comfort, Mitigating Jet Lag
Key Points
- 1United's Premium Plus upgrade for a 13-hour flight to Seoul cost 10,000 additional miles, approximately $100, offering significant value.
- 2Enhanced comfort features, including a 38-inch seat pitch and 6-inch recline, directly contributed to improved rest and quicker jet lag recovery.
- 3Despite several included perks being unused, the superior seating experience in United Premium Plus justified the upgrade for the long-haul international journey.
A traveler recently opted for an upgrade to United Airlines' Premium Plus, the carrier's premium economy offering, for a critical segment of a trans-Pacific journey. The decision was made for a nearly 13-hour flight from San Francisco to Seoul, South Korea, following a domestic leg from Washington, D.C. The upgrade cost an additional 10,000 miles, approximately $100, on top of a 55,000-mile economy fare, making the total trip cost significantly less than anticipated. The primary motivation for the upgrade was to enhance comfort and facilitate quicker adjustment to the 14-hour time difference, given the extensive 24-hour total travel time.
While several standard Premium Plus perks, such as priority boarding and two free checked bags, proved redundant or unused by the traveler, the core benefit of an enhanced seating experience was highly valued. The Premium Plus cabin provided a significantly more spacious environment, featuring a 38-inch seat pitch—a 7-inch increase over standard economy—and a 6-inch recline, double that of the economy cabin. Passengers also received a Saks Fifth Avenue blanket and pillow, an amenity kit, a larger seatback screen, and higher-quality headphones. In-flight dining was also elevated, served on ceramic dishes with metal flatware and real glassware.
The investment in Premium Plus ultimately delivered on its promise, allowing the traveler and family to arrive in Seoul feeling refreshed and well-rested. The improved comfort and ability to sleep effectively on the long-haul segment were credited with aiding a faster adjustment to the new time zone. Despite not utilizing all the included benefits, the traveler concluded that the superior seating and overall experience made the Premium Plus upgrade a worthwhile expenditure for extended international flights, indicating a strong likelihood of considering it again for similar journeys.
