The Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) has established a May 2026 deadline for the completion of seven master plan road projects, crucial for enhancing connectivity to the new Bhogapuram Greenfield International Airport. These 26.72 km of roads, estimated at Rs. 156 crore, are designed to streamline access for passengers from Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, and Srikakulam districts, easing traffic on the national highway. This development coincides with the airport's advanced construction, with a critical validation flight scheduled for December to certify approach and departure procedures.
The road projects have faced significant delays primarily due to land acquisition challenges, particularly the acquisition of 75 acres from 348 private landowners. While compensation options include cash, alternative sites, and transferable development rights (TDRs), only 155 TDRs have been issued so far. Additionally, some segments, such as the 8 km road from Adivivaram BRTS junction to Gandigundam, require forest clearance. Despite these hurdles, VMRDA officials express confidence in meeting the May 2026 deadline. Concurrently, the Bhogapuram airport itself is nearing operational readiness, with 90% of core building works, 97% of runway works, and 92% of taxiway works already completed, setting the stage for its imminent validation flight.
