ANA and JAXA Deploy Boeing 737 Sensors to Monitor Climate Change Gases
Japan’s ANA and JAXA are utilizing sensors mounted on a modified Boeing 737 to enhance detailed monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions.

Key Points

  • 1ANA and JAXA are utilizing a modified Boeing 737 to track greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide, on domestic routes.
  • 2Sensor equipment, which began testing in 2020, is now fully operational, providing detailed atmospheric measurements.
  • 3The program aims to offer more precise data collection capabilities compared to existing satellite monitoring systems.
  • 4ANA plans to expand the sensor deployment to a second aircraft and explore opportunities to generate revenue from the collected climate data.

ANA Holdings, Japan’s largest air carrier, has partnered with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to accelerate efforts using commercial aircraft as platforms for climate monitoring. This initiative involves mounting specialized sensors on passenger jets to improve the tracking of greenhouse gas emissions, such as carbon dioxide.

The equipment, which has been undergoing testing since 2020, is now fully operational within a modified section of a standard Boeing 737 aircraft used on domestic routes. The primary goal of this program is to gather more granular and detailed atmospheric measurements than those currently provided by certain satellite monitoring systems.

Following the successful deployment on the initial aircraft, ANA and JAXA plan to equip a second domestic aircraft with a similar device. Furthermore, the carrier is actively investigating strategies to leverage the collected environmental data to develop new revenue streams, integrating climate science directly into commercial operations.
