Emirates has solidified its commitment to Boeing with a $38 billion order for 65 Boeing 777X aircraft, announced at the Dubai Airshow. This order serves as a significant vote of confidence for Boeing, particularly given the persistent delays in the 777X program. Deliveries are projected to commence in the second quarter of 2027, and the agreement encompasses 130 GE9X engines from General Electric. With this latest purchase, Emirates' total order book now includes 270 Boeing 777X, 10 Boeing 777 freighters, and 35 Boeing 787s.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Emirates Group chairman and chief executive, emphasized the long-term nature of the commitment, highlighting its support for hundreds of thousands of high-value manufacturing jobs. Emirates, wholly owned by the Dubai government, remains the world's most profitable airline, reporting a $2.9 billion half-year profit. The airline has previously voiced concerns regarding the repeated delays in the 777X program, which have necessitated the refurbishment of its existing fleet, including the Airbus A380s.
Despite the delays and Boeing's recent challenges with safety concerns and legal cases, Emirates affirms its confidence in the manufacturer. Sheikh Ahmed addressed doubts about Emirates' substantial aircraft order backlog, assuring that each aircraft is carefully integrated into the airline's growth strategy. The new order also incorporates the option to upgrade to larger versions of the 777X, which are currently under development. This investment underscores Emirates' long-term vision and its commitment to maintaining a modern, efficient fleet.
