Kuching International Airport (KIA) is undergoing significant infrastructure development with the construction of an autonomous rapid transit (ART) station that will directly connect to the departure hall. This project, a key component of the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS), aims to provide a more efficient and convenient transportation solution for travelers. The Red Line of the KUTS project, managed by Sarawak Metro, is progressing rapidly, with noticeable advancements near Pelita Heights and the airport area, where the ART guideway is being installed.
The Red Line, spanning 12.3 kilometers from Kuching Central to Neu Pendington, will feature eight stations strategically located to connect key areas, including Kuching Central, Kuching International Airport, Pelita Heights, Tun Jugah, VivaCity, Jalan Tun Razak, and Pending. The majority of the Red Line will be elevated, supported by pier caps, with eight already installed and the ninth nearing completion. Construction is actively underway across multiple locations along the alignment to expedite the project's completion.
Sarawak Metro has announced temporary closures in certain areas of the airport to facilitate the construction process. The company has expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to passengers and airport operations during this period. The completion of the ART station promises to significantly improve connectivity and accessibility to Kuching International Airport, offering a greener and more efficient public transport option for the city.
