Vizhinjam Int'l Seaport working to bring home Indian cargo handled abroad: AVPPL official
The Vizhinjam International Seaport aims to become a major transshipment hub, attracting Indian cargo currently handled at foreign ports like Singapore and Dubai.

Key Points

  • 1Vizhinjam International Seaport aims to become a major transshipment hub for Indian cargo.
  • 2The port seeks to attract cargo currently handled in Singapore, Colombo, Salalah, and Dubai.
  • 3Vizhinjam's location near international shipping routes and existing transport networks provides a competitive advantage.
  • 4The port is expected to generate consumer surplus through reduced shipping costs.

The Vizhinjam International Seaport is positioning itself to become a world-class transshipment hub for India, with the goal of repatriating Indian cargo transshipment business currently conducted at foreign ports. An Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt Ltd (AVPPL) official stated that the port's strategic location and connectivity will enable it to compete with established hubs like Singapore, Colombo, Salalah, and Dubai. Once fully operational, the Vizhinjam Port is projected to generate significant consumer surplus through reduced shipping and navigation costs.

The port's proximity to key international shipping routes connecting Europe, the Persian Gulf, and the Far East, places it within 10 nautical miles of the east-west shipping axis. This advantageous location, combined with its connectivity to existing rail and road networks, positions Vizhinjam as a competitive alternative for cargo transshipment. National Highway 47 is located 2 km from the project, providing road access, while the national rail network is 12 km away. The Trivandrum International Airport is also conveniently located 15 km from the port, facilitating air cargo operations and passenger travel.

The development of Vizhinjam International Seaport reflects a strategic effort to enhance India's port infrastructure and reduce reliance on foreign ports for cargo handling. By offering competitive pricing and efficient operations, the port aims to capture a significant share of the Indian transshipment market. The project is expected to boost the local economy, create employment opportunities, and contribute to India's overall trade competitiveness. The port's success hinges on its ability to attract shipping lines and cargo owners by providing reliable and cost-effective transshipment services.
