Arkia expands long-haul with Bangkok, Phuket routes; adds A330s
Arkia launched direct flights to Bangkok and announced a Phuket route, introducing Airbus A330s and increasing competition with El Al on Thailand services.

Key Points

  • 1Arkia launched direct flights from Israel to Bangkok, with Phuket service starting July.
  • 2New long-haul routes utilize leased wide-body Airbus A330 aircraft with premium cabins.
  • 3Introduction of Arkia's services intensifies competition with El Al on Thailand routes.
  • 4Expansion is part of Arkia's strategic plan to grow long-haul operations and international presence.

Arkia has significantly expanded its long-haul operations with the launch of a new direct route from Ben Gurion Airport, Israel, to Bangkok, Thailand, on Thursday. This strategic move is complemented by the announcement of an upcoming service to Phuket, Thailand, set to commence in July. The airline's re-entry into the East Asian market marks a pivotal step in its growth strategy, aiming to strengthen its position as a leading international carrier.

The new Bangkok route initially operates twice weekly, with plans to adjust the schedule in May. Flights to Phuket will operate on Tuesdays. These services are facilitated by leased wide-body Airbus A330 aircraft, which feature a three-cabin configuration: economy, economy plus, and a premium business class. The business class offers lie-flat 180-degree seats, expanded baggage allowances, personal amenity kits, VIP service, and an upgraded dining experience, catering to a diverse range of passenger preferences.

Arkia's introduction of these direct flights to Thailand injects significant competition into a market previously dominated by El Al, which was the sole provider of direct services between Israel and Thailand. This new competition is expected to drive down airfares, offering more affordable options for travelers. Arkia's round-trip tickets are notably cheaper than existing offerings, with business-class options also available at competitive rates.

CEO Oz Berlowitz emphasized that flying to Thailand is an integral part of Arkia’s strategic plan to expand long-haul operations. Over the past year, the airline has opened new destinations, integrated wide-body aircraft into its fleet, and enhanced service standards across all classes. The Bangkok and Hanoi routes, alongside existing services to New York and Sri Lanka, underscore Arkia’s robust growth momentum and its commitment to providing Israeli travelers with competitive options and excellent service.
